Rationale

A few months ago I’ve started a PhD in bioinformatics and I’m currently endeavoring into a field that hasn’t received much attention yet in the bioinformatics community: Visual analytics. As I’m writing this 13 articles related to the subject have been indexed in PubMed, one of them a review.

Visual analytics is an emerging discipline that combines the abstract visual metaphors and interactive interfaces of information visualization with tools from the areas of statistical data analysis, knowledge management, cognitive science and others.

I will use this blog as a platform to collect and disseminate ideas, opinions and results from the field of visual analytics. My target audience are bioinformaticians and computational biologists but I also want to invite members of the visualization and visual analytics communities to share their thoughts.

Eventually this is yet another attempt to establish an open scientific discourse.

Postscriptum
For the record: I googled “visual analytics” bioinformatics and “visual analytics” “computational biology”. The searches produced 839 and 295 hits respectively.
